Supporting People Using Direct Payments (SPUD) was originally formed in late 1990’s to help service users to better understand what it meant to have a direct payment, against the old system of home help.
Direct Payments gave Users the choice to employ their own Carers or Personal Assistants as some preferred to call them. Panderers Trust was the first support Agency I was involved with and they supported users with Direct payment set up and brokerage.
In the early days, Direct Payment users formed their own peer group, which later became known as SPUD. With the changes in Direct Payments and the cuts in funding the aims of SPUD is taking on a different role We, as a group are more Social and looking more to engaging in making it possible for the less able people of Sheffield to get out and about on a regular basis.
In September of 2015 I approached the residents of Guildford Grange Assisted Housing at Norfolk Park Sheffield, to introduce them to the idea of joining SPUDS and forming a new social activities group. This met with great enthusiasm. It was decided that we would join in with the residents once a month to discuss what activities they would like to participate in and where they would like to go on outings.
We have had a few days out this year, which included a Fun day and lunch at Oswaldtwistle mill shopping centre, a tribute Luncheon at the Carlton Hotel, a day trip to Mablethorpe and finally The Yorkshire Wildlife park. Our next event is to be a Christmas Lunch at Oswaldtwistle Mill Shopping Centre.
To help keep these trips affordable for everyone we hold different fund raising events throughout the year, our next one is to be a Santa’s Grotto at the Guildford Grange Christmas Fair on the 3rd December.
